RC24 The Worry Website Ivy

The Worry Website by Jacqueline Wilson is a great contemporary fiction book that captures a hard time in a child’s life. I believe this book is contemporary fiction because the story is made up, but it does not have talking animals, time travel, or anything out of the ordinary, like, say, Alice in Wonderland. Another example of it being contemporary fiction is that it is set at the same time as it is written.

In this book, Mr. Speed has made a website where if you have any worries, you are allowed to write them down anonymously without being judged, but the problem is that some of the comments are quite obvious. Which leads to kids being exposed and being bullied. In the story, the chapters are each person’s worries that are written in a comment, as well as their outside of school life.

Little Women

I think that Little Women fits into the classic section. Because it was written a long time ago.

In the book Little Women there are four girls Beth, Amy, Joe and Meg. These Girls are sisters. Amy is the youngest. Amy loves to paint, she especially loves cheesy caramels but when she brings them to school they get taken off her and her paws get smacked with a ruler. Beth is the next oldest. Beth is the one march sister that never complains when she has to do chores of run errands. Beth always loves to play with her three bunny rabbits. Jo is the next oldest. Jo is the tomboy out of the four sisters she loves to climb trees and run around just like anyone else. Jo loves to write stories in her book and boy does she love to read you always find Jo with her nose stuck in a book. Meg is the oldest of the four. Meg has a job where she is the tutor of four little mice. Meg hates her job, but she does it because she wants to support her family.

I recommend that you should read Little Women, because it is kind and its pretty easy to read. Even if you can’t read ask a parent to read it to you.

40 Book Challenge – Squished

I believe that the book Squished goes under realistic fiction. Because it is just like a real family doing real things.

In the book squished eleven year old Avery Lee has six other siblings, she also has to share a room with two of them. All Avery wants is to have a room to herself, but only the oldest her brother Theo gets a room by himself. Avery loves to go to the summer fair with her two best friends at the end of summer but is feeling squished by her friends and her family. When one of her best friends becomes best friends with a girl (Charlotte) who moves into the neighbourhood Avery feels like their friendship has ended. When Avery’s Mum tells the whole family that they are moving Avery gets really mad. She says that she doesn’t want to move and that she would want to run away. What Avery doesn’t realise is that her two sisters’s Josie and Juliet hear. Later that evening when they get ready for bed. The Family realises that Josie and Juliet have run away. RC24 I’m Too Fond Of My Fur!

I’m Too Fond of My Fur! by Elisabetta Dami is a marvellous mystery/fantasy fiction book that stands out from the many books in the Geronimo Stilton series. I believe this book is a mystery/fantasy because you don’t know when the story is going to unexpectedly turn for the worse or better. I also believe it is fantasy because there are made-up cities and places, such as New Mouse City, where he lives. In these stories, there are also mermaids, yetis, and dragons, which are all examples of things that you might find in a fantasy story.

In this story, Geronimo gets a call from his good friend Professor von Volt saying that his life is in danger, and Geronimo has to get his secret diary, which is at his house. Von Volt also said that he was in his secret lair in the Himalayas. After he heard that he knew what he must do, off he went to the Himalayas. When von Volt called, he also said something about a YETI, but Stilton didn’t know what to do about that because the phone was dying out. Maybe he just misheard.

RC24 Karen’s Birthday

Karen’s Birthday by Katy Farina is a striking contemporary fiction book! I believe this book is contemporary fiction because it is made up and is set at the same time it is written, but there are no talking animals or any fantasy things. Another example of it being contemporary fiction is that it is very funny and is aimed at younger people.

When it is Karen’s birthday, the ONLY thing she wants is for her two families to be together on her birthday, but her wish hasn’t come true….yet that is. Karen sets up a number of tricks that are bound to work, but they just end up in more fights, which, by the way, is not what she wanted! She just wanted her mommy and daddy to talk, but everything just ends up with them yelling at each other over the phone.

What will happen next?

Who is your favourite character and why?

My favourite person in this book is Karen because she is so funny, but incredibly funny without even knowing she is! Karen is also the main character in this book, so we see the most of her. Another reason is that she is so caring as well as sassy.

Ngahuru

Kia ora everyone today my class and I were doing poems about Ngahuru/Autumn. Here’s mine!

Ngahuru

Grey softly painted sky with just a hint of blue and white

Cool mist of an  air lingering  around like a old fan.

Almost you could say its like winter but there’s just something that makes it not.

At  dark of night  rain pellets down quietly

Making  morning  feeling like you’re freezing to death.

My hands are rocks, hard and cold.

Whispers of wind often come by relying on you to keep  a secret.

Wispy, wary weather blends into one to make a perfect Ngahuru.

Cold days are long gone by six o’clock to a rainy night.

Leaves blow around speedily as the bitter  breeze goes by.

That friends is what you call autumn.

Ngahuru Poem

Ngahuru Whā

Like a wave crashing down

Leaves can’t help but fall

The inevitable can’t be stalled

They hang from their oak trees

And I wonder why

Leaves have turned from calming greens

To violent fires from awful scenes

And I am somehow inspired

By lush leaves extraordinary effort

To stay with their home tree

Cold wind blows a gale

Trying to rip leaves off oak trees

Other leaves fall off on their own

They give up their home

Because it’s hard to hang

From a terrific oak tree

The wind ensures no mahuetanga

Dork Diaries Crush Catastrophe

Dork Diaries Crush Catastrophe by Rachel Renee Russell is a sensational diary fiction and humour book that is sure to make you giggle at some point. I believe that is diary fiction as well as a humour book because it is written in diary form, yet it is still very humourous.

In this book, Nikki Maxwell is met with a very hard decision: either go on an all-expenses-paid trip to Paris (with a very cute guy) or go on tour with her BFF’s and her dream man. She is completely and utterly TORN!!  She knows that her friends and her crush have all quit some activity to go on this tour, but this trip is a one-in-a-lifetime experience to study art in her dream city! What will she do?

If you could change one thing about the book, what would it be and why?

I personally would want an answer in the same book, like what if she decides to go to Paris, go on tour, or neither? I NEED ANSWERS!

RC24 Goodnight Mister Tom

Goodnight Mister. Tom by Michelle Magorian is an extraordinary historical fiction book that takes place in World War II. I believe that this book is historical fiction because it is set in the past, but it didn’t happen, and fiction means made up, so therefore it is historical fiction.

In this book, Tom Oakley, or “Mister. Tom,” is an ill-tempered and reclusive widow who is in his sixties. William (who is the main character in this story), however, is a timid and thin young boy who wets the bed every day because he has a mentally unstable mother. So when Williams mother wanted a better life for William, she wanted a person who either had to be religious or lived close to a church, and that is how he ended up at Mister. Tom’s house.

Gift Bag

1. A new bike, because the one he has later in the book is old.

2. A blanket, because in World War II they were hard to get.

3. A dog, because he adores Mister Tom’s one (Sammy).

RC24 Felix and The Red Rats

Felix and the Red Rats by James Norcliffe is an amazing fantasy novel. I believe that Felix and the Red Rats is a fantasy novel because it is made up, and in the book, things like rats, cats, hair, and people turn bright red!

In this book, ever since David’s great uncle Felix visited, things have been weird. First, it was little things that you wouldn’t even notice, but when they were bright red, it was hard not to. When those things occurred, David thought he was going crazy, but it turns out everyone can also see them.

Was it Great Uncle Felix who brought this curse with him?

I want to remember that this author (James Norcliffe) was born in Greymouth, and this book has also won many book awards, like the Lianza Children’s Finalist Book Awards of 2014.

RC24 Boy In The Tower

Boy In The Tower by Polly Ho-Yen is an incredible book. I believe that Boy In The Tower is a contemporary fiction book as well as a bit of horror because in the book there are these things called bluchters that kill people.

In this story, the towers are being eaten by the bluchters and are falling down, but Ade is stuck in the tower with his mum because she has agoraphobia. Until Ade meets Dory and Obi, he is all alone because his mum is always in bed and claims she just needs to sleep while the world outside is changing around them, and she doesn’t even realise it.

My favourite character in this book is Obi because he is so mysterious but means well. He is also so caring because when everyone left, he stayed and supplied Ade and his mother until Ade met him. So really, he helped Ade without even knowing who he was!

RC24 Diary Of An Awesome Friendly Kid

Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid by Jeff Kinney is a marvellous contemporary fiction book. I believe it is a contemporary fiction book because it is set in the time that it is written and does not have talking animals, nor does it have time travel, even though it is made up.

In this book, Rowley Jefferson (you may know him as the Wimpy Kid’s best friend) is writing in his own journal because he always sees his BBF friend writing in his! While Rowley is ecstatic about his book, Greg isn’t as happy. Anyway, Greg thinks that Rowley stole his idea and convinces Rowley to change it to his own biography… How do you think that gonna end?

My favourite character in this book is Rowley because, one, he is the main character, so you heard the most about him, and two, he is so funny and doesn’t even realise it because that is his everyday life!

RC24 Jessi’s Secret Language GN

Jessi’s Secret Language by Chan Chau is a spectacular graphic novel. Jessi’s Secret Language is part of the Babysitters Club graphic novel series. I believe that this book is a graphic novel because it is in a comic format and includes speech as well as normal text.

In this book, the club gets a call from a new mum in the neighbourhood who has a deaf child called Matt and would like a regular babysitter for him and his sister Haley. But there is one problem: everyone has a full schedule, except Jessi, and in order to become his sitter, she needs to learn sign language. As well as her dance schedule… will it be too much for her?

What is one lesson you learned from this book?

I learnt that no matter how hard times are, if you push through, the outcome will be amazing and that everything will be fine!
